Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Wisconsin

Slander/Defimation of Character

Recently, Me and some of my friends got in trouble with one of the local police departments. The officers of this department has now made many numerous, untrue remarks about me to other parties involved. They have called me ''poison'' and have even gone so far as to say that I am a habitual drug user, and abuse cocaine on a daily basis. I believe that this is defimation of character, is there anyway i can handle this legally?

Re: Slander/Defimation of Character

You can certainly file a complaint with the municipality's Fire & Police Commission, if there is one in the city/town, or find out what department or organization handles citizen complaints. If you are going to make a civil claim against the police department, you will need to file a Notice of Injury form with the municipality clerk within 120 days from the date of the incident. To be successful in recovering monetary damages, you will have to prove that the officers told false information about you, knowing it to be false, and that the information caused you financial damages. If you chose to pursue any civil claims, you should consult with an attorney as soon as possible.
