An accountant is working for you and is your agent. You are entitled to your whole file, however there might be certain work product that is exclusive to what he did for you to prepare statements and that is his to keep. He should keep copies and you may be required to pay for copies.

Generally speaking, an accountant should return all documents requested by a client, and all orignals with a cover letter listing those returned documents and a statement that other documents will be destroyed within 3 years unless ordered longer by court or administrative action.
