Continuances are up to the judge. However, if you can provide the Court with a reasonable explanation for the need for the continuance, first time requests for a 30 day continuance are generally granted. You should call the Clerk of the Court and ask for their procedures. They may have a "fill-in-the-blanks" Motion to Continue which you can just fill-out and submit to the Court. In addition, you have a much better chance if the other party agrees.

I'm not sure if there is a "shortcut". Instead, you simply need to file an appropriate Motion, stating the basis for the need for continuance. You can ask that the Motion be heard on an expedited basis.
