Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Australia

Hello

Ten years ago I was charged with Grevious bodily harm & found guilty. I had to pay $25000.00 compensation. As I had no money the Government paid for it. My Questions is how long does this dept carry against my name. Also Do I have to pay back the state if I get the money

Dear Sir,

You would need to check any documents you were asked to sign at the time relating to the government's securing of the debt against you. If you were not forced to sign anything about repayment then it would seem that you have been released from this obligation. Normally the standard amount of time within which a creditor must pursue a debt in NSW is 6 years so if it has been over 6 years there will also be a statute of limitations in place preventing recovery. Please contact me if you have any further questions.

Kind Regards,

David Coleman
