Spitful Referal

can you press charges against someone who lied about your past work history to a possible employer because of a personal grudge?

No, this would be considered a civil matter and not criminal and depending on what was said by the ex-employer the statement may have been privileged. If you feel that the statement was malicious then you should seek the guidance of a labor & employment attorney.
