Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Collection from eleven years ago

When I lived in CA I bought a car and then lost my job so my new car was repossessed. I never heard anything about additional debt owed on the vehicle. I thought the debt was settled with the repossession of the car. Now eleven years later a collection agency says I owe them $35,000 for a Subaru that only cost about $12,000 when I bought it. I tried to tell them I do not have the money to pay them $35,000 since that is more than I make in a year. I need to know what rights do I have on an eleven year old debt that I did not know I owed. I would like to settle with them on something reasonable and am not trying to get out of something I did years ago that was my fault. I really do not have the money for an attorney so I do not know what to do. Please help if you can. Thanks.

Re: Collection from eleven years ago

Write to them, certified mail, stating that you dispute the debt, demand proof of the debt, tell them that any remedy they may have is barred by the statute of limitations, and all subsequent communications with you are to be in writing.
