Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

collections

I have a question regarding a collection agency. What is owed is one thing. Then they are charging on top of that intrest fee of about $1500.00 can they do that.?

The amout owed is about $500.00 and they call if payment is 1 or 2 days late.

What advice can you please give me?

Is what they are doing legal?

Is this a collection agency or a creditor? It sounds like a creditor because it sounds like you are making payments regularly. Different rules apply so if you can clarify that, it would help you get an answer.
