Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

online gambling

Am I responsible for paying debt accrued from online sportsbetting offshore? I found out recently that it was illegal to bet online and why was the credit card company allowed to authorize these transactions?

Re: online gambling

The issue of online gambling debts is dicey.

California has a strong public policy against enforcing gambling debts. Your credit card is probably subject to laws of another state such as North Dakota or Delaware. I don't know the public policies in those states. If you are sued in California courts, and your only credit card debt is for gambling, your attorney could try to get the suit dismissed.

However, if you have other charges on your credit cards, you cannot allocate your payment to the card issuer to milk for your child and not for gambling.
