Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Arson

My friend lit his house on fire in an attempt to commit suicide, he plans on pleading temporary insanity, his wife is having an affair. He is a hard worker with no crimnal past. He is being charged with arson and assault with a deadly weapon. What would be the weapon. He spent a few dayd in a mental hospital. He also had started taking an anti-depressant med three days before this incident. He said it made him feel worse. For the most part he is the most level headed person I know he just snapped under the circumstances. What is the worst he can expect?

Re: Arson

Worst? A long prison sentence.

If defended well by good counsel, he may be able to get a much better 'deal' that includes little if any jail, but does include psych programs, probation, etc. Have him contact good local counsel.

Re: Arson

Unfortunately there's no "temporary insanity" in CA. "Just snapped" will earn him a long stretch in state prison. A good lawyer, not the public defender, might be abe to make the case for Not Guilty by reason of insanity.
