Legal Question in Medical Leave in California

Pregnancy/Maternity Leave

I work for a college in CA. My boss has said I can only take off 12 weeks. From what I have read on this site, the state of CA has extended amounts of time one can take after having a child. Does this require supervisor approval or automatic? My understanding is that the Federal and State FMLA reg's combine to give greater, possibly longer coverage. Can you please provide more info. This is my first child and I would like to spend some time with him. Thank you

Re: Pregnancy/Maternity Leave

You can take more time off but only if it is medically necessary, not because you want to spend more time with your child. Under the family leave laws, you are allowed to take up to 12 weeks off for childbirth. Under our anti-discrimination law, you may take up to an additional 4 months off due to a pregnancy related disability or medical condition.
