Legal Question in Medical Leave in California

I've read 12 weeks, 16weeks, and in CA up to 7 mos off. I'm confused!

I've read outlines of the California Family Right Act. Most often, it indicates that a mother can take 12 weeks off. Yet, I've also seen 16 weeks and a maximum of 7 months. Can you please explain this to me. I'd like to take more than 12 weeks to bond with my child. How can I do this?

There are two laws that may apply in California. You are permitted to take up to 12 weeks off for the birth of a child under the family leave laws, assuming you meet all the required conditions. In addition, you may be entitled to take up to four months off for pregnancy related medical conditions. It is doubtful that the four additional months may be used for bonding with the child, unless this can be shown to be due to medically necessary.
