Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I have been on disability since Jan 7, 2011 and still unable to work. I had health insurance with my employer. They sent me a lettet June 24, 11 stating that my medical insurance will be terminated Aug 1. I cn continue my coverage for 378. per month if I choose to. My question is, Can they bill me from Jan through June for my medical insurance? They are now saying I owe them $1878. If they would have given me a choice I would have went to County Doctor. Also, I paid only $90. per month when I was working.

I assume you are off work because of a non-work related injury/disease. Since they did not tell you you would have to pay a higher rate and the average person might not know that, they should not be able to charge you for the time before they warned you and you had a chance to arrange other medical coverage.
