Legal Question in Employment Law in California

i am a front desk employee at a hotel. I had a guest ask for quarters so that he may use our laundry facilities. The guest gave me pennies & nickles in exchange for quarters. The next day my manager informed me not to do that in the future, and said that i am required to buy the coins. Is that legal for him to require me to do so?

I'm sure that having to deal with small change creates a slight issue but your manager should consider the goodwill that helping a guest creates. Sometimes it's the little things that reinforces a guest's loyalty. The policy seems short-sighted.
