Legal Question in Employment Law in California

i'm an IC for a Fitness Bootcamp, My Boss terminated my contract out of anger and now wants me to pay back $$ for clients that I was serving. He stated that he was going to terminate my contract because he was not happy with the $$ he was getting. I decided to put in my 30 days noticed because I was tired of having issue with my boss and did not like the way I was treated. During the time of my noticed he started complaining and I called him a nagging old lady and to stop complaing. This is the same guy that talk rudely to and very inapproprieate to his staff. He became upset & decided to end my contract early not allowing me to service my clients to the end of my noticed and now demands that I pay him $$. I've gotten and few unprofessional text messages from him since I was terminated. Now he is claiming to file a suit against me and put a lein on my taxes and a judgement on my SSI. I want to start my own business but don't want this gentleman in my pocket as he stated he would be in a previous text if I started my own. not sure what to do. Lost IN Fitness

I don't know what kind of contract you had with this guy or whether you owe him any money arising out of that contract but even if he were successful in suing you for breach of contract, and were able to obtain a judgment against you, he would not be able to place a lien on your taxes or social security. He could garnish any wages from another employer or place a lien on property you may own. But you are a long way from that ever happening. It sounds to me like he is trying to scare you into paying him money. You need to have an attorney review your contract for a legal opinion on your rights and obligations.
