Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Payroll Deduction

Is it legal for an employer to deduct worked hours from an employee? Example: an employee is informed that if he/she is either 6min or more late, half an hour will be deducted from their shift, is this legal??

Re: Payroll Deduction

No, but the employee could generally be fired for being late or have his/her rate of pay reduced thereafter. This assumes an at-will employee, which is usually the case, unless a collective baraganing agremeement (labor union) or employment contract exists.
