can you be terminated for a hearsay report claiming someone overheard me making a harassing statement to a client. Client denies ever being harassed by me.

Unlike being charged with committing a crime, in employment, an employer does not have to prove an employee guilty beyond reasonable doubt. They can fire at will. This means, even if you can prove your innocence, the employer can still fire you. You would have to be able to prove there was some unlawful ulterior motive for firing you and used this reason as an excuse. Government and union employees may be an exception to this rule.
