Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I have a question about a security deposit Please. The owners don't want to give me my 250$ deposit back. Their first answer as to why not was.."O since you first moved in you have once cleaned" (dog poop) which is not only not what a deposit is for..but is also untrue ( I have picked it up weekly they just keep changing exactly when they want it picked up including asking me to pick it up by the next morning when it's already dark out "oh use a flashlight") Now they say it's because I didn't give them a 30 day notice...I never signed a lease..I pay rent month to month...I don't ever recall saying specifically ok 30 days...only give a good amount of notice please. The only reason I didn't give a 30 day notice is because they got on my last straw...I find these living conditions unsuitable to live in...the shower is cold...they keep changing their rules...& I cant even have my tv volume on 2 bars without it being to loud (I have to use subtitles) is there any solution...I cant afford to loose that deposite

When you pay rent month to month either party may terminate the rental on 30-days notice (or 60-days if the landlord is giving the notice and the tenant has been in the property for over a year). That means you owed rent for 30-days after you told the landlord you were moving out, regardless of whether you moved out earlier. Not liking your living situation is not grounds for terminating your rental with less than the legal notice.
