Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Security Deposit Not Renturned

I need to know how to get my security deposit back quickly- My landlord gave me a check for my security deposit, but stopped payment on the check. Do I sue for illegally withholding my deposit, or for writing a bad check? Do I need to sue at all to get it back? Do I sue the woman I signed the renters agreement with, or the owner of the house where I rented the room? I am now living in a different state... how do I go about taking legal action against her from 1,000 miles away?

I need more facts, before I give you an answer.

However, most likely, you will have to sue in small claims court, and will have to do everything but certified mail.

As far as quickly from 1,000 miles away, you can forget about it, unless you retain a local (California) attorney.
