Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

My friend's ex girlfriend wants to take him to small claims court for $700, because when they moved to a new apartment, she couldn't afford her half of the rent, so she took out a loan in her name, and he said he would help pay whenever he could. Not even a month after the loan and the move, they broke up, but he still helped pay for a year while they lived together. After a year she moved out and claims he still owes her money for the loan.

We do not have all the facts needed. I am assuming that he paid half of the rent and gave her what he could as to her half; if that is the situation, he lived up to his agreement and she has no valid claim against him. If he did not pay his half of the rent and the agreement was that he would pay half, he owes her for the amounts she had to pay on his behalf. I do not understand what the loan was for.
