Legal Question in Criminal Law in Connecticut

What do I do?

I was caught for a single count of Misdameanor Criminal Mischief. During a snowstorm, I blew a couple of donuts in my truck in front of a local high school. Unfortunately, the school was equipped with a security surveillance system. They got pictures of my truck from the cameras, but no license plate. I was spotted by the state cop a month and a half later. He stopped, and drilled me about the incident. With the pictures in hand of my truck, I had no other choice but to confess, and cooperate. After talking to the principle of the school, The Trooper said that I would be getting arrested after a warrant had been filed. Now I am facing this charge and very nervous about the outcome. This is my first involvment with the law in any way, and I don't know what to do, Please Help.

Re: What do I do?

I can't tell from your message whether you've been actually charged yet or not. If so, you'll be given a court date. When you go to court, after some waiting, you'll have an opportunity (usually)to talk to the state's attorney(prosecuter). You should emphasize that you have no prior history. You should be dressed respectfully. You should emphasize that no accident occurred and noone was hurt. You should emphasize that you made a mistake and you know it was stupid, etc. You should do all of these things if your intent is working something out with the prosecutor. If you are going to try to defend yourself (and this is going to be difficult given your admission and the photos), then you've got no obligation to give any information to the prosecutor. If you try the first route and can impress the prosecutor with your sincerity and such, he may drop the charge or lessen it. He or you may suggest some sort of charitable contribution. Tell him you want to avoid a record. There are a variety of alternatives. If things get too crazy, tell the prosecutor you need time to get an attorney. You will get a continued date. Get into court early. Don't go in with an attitude. If the court requires you to enter a plea at any time, plead not guilty. Essentially, go to the first court date - see if you can work something out with the prosecutor. If not, and things are making you nervous, ask for a continuance to get an attorney. Good Luck.
