I was let go of a company that I felt was unjust. I had a private conversation with a friend of mine on my own phone off company time. It was deemed inappropriate and a coworker overheard. The person took it to HR and was fired with no chance to explain the situation...I understand that the company is "at will" but still...

That is the essence of employment at will. Unless you have a contract stating otherwise or you were terminated in violation of specific statute mainly DC Human Rights Act, Titl 7, ADA, ADEA or EPA, the firing is legal.
