Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Can I be sued if a company sends me a letter saying I owe them for a credit card I have never had? The scenario is my other half just found out that he owes for a credit card he has never had. They claim to have sent mail and called but no one has ever talked to them nor have anyone received any mail except for the one we just got saying we owe.
