apartment lease responsiblity

My elderly mothers new apt. lease holds me responsible for

the remainder of her lease in case of her death wether it be one month or twelve months.

Is this legal?

Hello: In response to your question, I do not have all of the facts, but if you signed the lease guaranteeing the rent, you may be liable. If you did not sign the lease, you would not be liable for any unpaid rent or breach of lease. If something happened to her with several months left on the lease and you have signed the lease, you could work out a deal with the landlord. Landlord has a legal obligation to try to relet the premises. 'Hope this helps. Tom rosenblum

Only if you agreed and signed. But there are ways to mitigate.
