Two family members have been arrested and charges are basiclly for ''operating chop shop'' theft by taking, receiving, also possesion. They were arrested approx. two and a half weeks ago. one is supposely only charged with possesion of methamphetamines...No bond has been set. How long can they keep them in jail and not set bond?

Re: Setting Bond

I assume from your zip code, you are in the Smyrna, Cobb County, Georgia area. Once brought before a committing magistrate, your relatives need to assume some affirmative action to review the issue of bond and the amount. This is done in the form of a jail arraignment in Cobb County, within the first 24 to 48 hours of arrest. The potential charges are significant and they will want a preliminary or probable cause hearing to discover as much as they can about the charges they face. Each should retain counsel and move as rapidly as possible to request appropriate hearings and to insure their valuable right to preliminary hearing. It is very likely that they may have positions which are in conflict with each other and I therefore suggest that you consult with them to determine if they feel their interests would best be served by two different attorneys. You may call my office in Cartersville, if you have further specific questions.
