Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia
Re: Qualifying for Unemployment Compensation
About 3 yrs ago I voluntarily left the employ of a large corp. that I had worked for long term. I left for what appeared to be a better job: a self employment opportunity to help grow a small family/sole proprietor business. Since that time, the family business has not performed well due to the economy and has not provided me with an income/profits per se, as it is still in the start up phase. Someone mentioned that I may qualify for unemployment benefits through my former corp. employer even though I left voluntarily, since I left for what was supposed to be a better job. Also, I was told that with the current economic environment apparently the standards may be more relaxed for qualifying. Do I have a chance of qualifying? Thank you!

Unfortutely resigning to pursue a better job opportunity (even if the opportunity did not turn out to be what was intended) is not a qualifying reason to collect unemployment. However, if your current family business is a corporation and it pays into the unemployment system on your behalf on a quarterly basis, you may be eligible to receive unemployment benefits based on the current lack of work.
