Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Illinois

Teacher's Rights if Student Posts Lies on the Internet

What rights does a teacher have if a student posts rumors about the teacher on the internet? Should the Internet provider be named in the suit? Should the school be named for a hostile work environment if no disciplinary actions were taken against the student? Would a class action suit including all of the teachers named be more effective? Would it be cost effective to contact a lawyer in this situation?

It depends a great deal on whether the information posted is scandalous, and could harm your reputation. Without knowing the answer to that, it is hard to say if a lawsuit would be a good remedy.

I would urge you to contact a trial lawyer and set up a meeting. Most consults are free of charge in cases like this, and if they can help you, they'll let you know.

Good luck.
