Legal Question in Technology Law in Illinois

Internet laws?

I was wondering what I can do to protect my website-- patent, copyright, etc? My website idea is pretty original and I was wondering what steps can be taken so that others do not imitate my idea. Also, I was wondering what laws apply to advertising on the internet? My site would include bars and clubs advertising, but I have heard from a couple people that the bars/clubs aren't allowed to advertise their drink specials. Does this apply to the Internet? Also, if alcoholic content is on a website, does the site need to check that the users are at least 21 years of age? Just one more thing, what type of censorship (as far as profanity) should we follow on our website? I am located in the Champaign-Urbana area in Central Illinois. I appreciate all the answers and help that you guys can possibly give me. Thank you for your time.

Re: Internet laws?

My suggestion is trademark protection, copyright protection and patent protection, in that order. If your idea has been out more than a year, a patent may be barred by law. If less than a year, any patent may need to be filed soon to meet the one year grace period, and your overseas rights are likely already gone. Website patents need to be filed before the launch of the website if the website creator is going to seek patent coverage, as otherwise foreign rights are lost. Trademarks and copyrights are automatic, but need to be registered for enforcement purposes.

Call if you need help protecting these rights or if you need more detailed advice.
