Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

A friend owes me a large some of money (more than 5k) that I loaned him a little while back. Unfortunately we didn't write it out (mistake, I know) but do have the bank statements showing the money transferred. I said I wouldn't charge interest or anything but I do expect to get paid back.

What is the best way to go about getting paid back? What kind of lawyer would I need? Is there a way to put a lien on the house?

1. Law assumes loan, not gift. But it would be nice for friend to acknolwedge the debt in writing.

2. Any lawyer could handle a case like this.

3. Lien? Unless friend is willing to sign a mortgage, most likely only a judgment lien after a lawsuit.

You may want to have a lawyer send a letter. Your other option is to hire an attorney to sue him, or sue him in small claims court. Otherwise, Stephen is accurate, there is no lien unless he signs a mortgage or you obtain a judgment. Good luck.
