What are the options to serve process in a lawsuit if you have been unable to have the summons served in person?

Depends on the kind of lawsuit, and who the defendant is. Without more information it's impossible to say. For instance, if this is an eviction case and you just want possession and not a rent judgment, you can "post" notice. Or if this is against a corporation, you may be able to serve the Secretary of State. Also you can serve a third party depending on circumstance -- at the home, or at a business. You'll have to be much more specific for any real answer.
