Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Illinois

I recently had a lawsuit against me. I missed the court date, and the ruling was made against me. I am currently unemployed and am a full time student. I have made significant attempts to find employment to no avail. What, if anything can they do if I can't afford to pay the lawsuit at this time?

Assuming a default judgment was entered against you or is about to be you could seek to vacate it. That would require going to court and you would be best off doing so with a lawyer. Otherwise, the judgment is good forever and they can take any income or assets you aquire in the future to satisfy the judgment plus interest.

You should vacate the default and then try to figure out a way to pay the money you owe.

The worst case scenario is that they get a judgment against you, you won't pay it and they will get your license suspended and you will have even less of a chance to get work and get things straightened out.

So before things snowball, see if you can get things straightened out. Best advice I can give.

Unless this invoved a car accident, I do not beleive that your license is at risk. Otherwise, I agree with the other counsel.
