Legal Question in Immigration Law in Illinois

want to adopt relative's child and bring into us

My wife and I were considering adopting her cousin's child and bringing him here to be our son. Once adopted I'm not sure what would be required of us to enter him into the U.S, they live in Haiti. The boy is 8 months old, his mother died during birth and his father is uncapable of taking care of him. Father has contacted us and several other relatives about taking the son from him. We can adopt him and recognize him as our son. I'm also wondering about length of times of the different processes. Thank you

Re: want to adopt relative's child and bring into us

It is certaintly possible to adopt the baby and bring him to be with you. Unfortunately, it can be time consuming and expensive. I am not clear if the father is going to retain custody until adoption can be arranged. It is difficult to estimate exact costs and timing, but you would be very lucky to accomplish it under six months, and a year is more realistic. If you would like to explore this further, please let me know.
