if an advocate joins as a legal officer of a private corporate insurance agent, does he have to surrender his licence .

No, you may only seek "suspension" of your licence by informing the concerned Bar Council, so that there is be an automatic 'revocation' whenever you are out of job. You should contact Secretary of your Bar Council for necessary formalities.

If he is full time employed then he should and if part time advisory then not need.
