Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

How can I prove I paid

I had a credit card which I paid off in 1999, I never heard from that company again and I never used that card again, now in 2003 some company sent me a notice that I owed a bill and they had bought the account and it was three hundred dollars more then the original bill, I told them I had paid that bill in full (Ipaid with a money order which I have no record of now)they sold the account again it is now an attorneys account and now the amount has went to $600.00 more then the bill. I have very good credit and a mistake has been made some where, my Mom said the SOL has run out now and not to worry about it, my problem somebody got my money, why did'nt the original creditor contact me, and how do I go about retreiving a copy of the money order? What do I say to the new people, should I hire an attorney? I have always paid my bills on time. What do I do. Thank you for you time.

You need to send written notice to the collection agency that you are disputing the bill and the basis for that dispute. The collection agency has the obligation then to go back and verify the outstanding balance. However, I doubt that it will be able to go back and find the actual billing information regarding the posting of your money order and the new balance. More likely, it will simply send you general notice that the old creditor has verified the balance owed. If this matter is not settled at this point then your best bet is to hire an attorney who handles creditor/debtor issues to get to the bottome of the problem.
