Legal Question in Criminal Law in Kansas

Bigamy

I was married to a man that was still married to his first wife. We split up. Later I married another man. We are now seperated due to domestic violence. I now have bigamy charges pressed against me. I thought because my last marriage was void I did not have to get a divorce. What is the law here. Cann anyone help me? Did I have to go through a divorce even though the first marriage was void? What should I do?
