Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Louisiana

Background Checks.

I was attempting to open a new account for a company that I was doing independent contract work for. During the meeting the company ask if they could do a background check on me. He aked me to write my social security number on the back of a card. Under pressure to open the group I wrote it down. He also had someone from thier office call me later that day to get my drivers licence number and date of birth. Is this legal? or did this violate any background check or privacy laws. The business will not return my calls. Please help.
