Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

Heiship Laws

Can a child inherit from someone who is not a biological parent but name appears on his birth certificate? This child now lives with the biological father but has a different legal father. The adoption papers are not yet final and we would like to know once the paperwork is final, will this child be able to inherit any money from the man who was the legal father?

Re: Heiship Laws

If the person on the birth certificate has not disavowed the child and/or been determined NOT to be the father by court order, then the child can inherit. That is the very generalized answer. Further details and other information would be necessary. An adoption does NOT affect the child's right to inherit from the biological parent.
