Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Louisiana

My father died without a will. He had no real estate and about 17,000 of debt and about 13,000 in the bank. Do we need to do anything? We donated his body to the university and took care of expenses. Can we walk away.

Yes, all the heirs can renounce the succession. The creditors can sue his estate for the assets without involving the family.

You could walk away... or you could get the money out of the bank and keep it. Odds are about 99% the creditors would not come after you for the $13,000.
