Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

Subpoena to appear before a Grand Jury

I received a subpoena to appear before a Grand Jury. The case is a double murder case. I know the person charged, but I have no idea how I might be relevant to this case. I know nothing about the murders and have not been in contact with this person for almost a whole year. I don't even think this person knew my real name, they only knew my nickname. What happens when you appear before a Grand Jury, and what are my rights. Since I don't know anything about the murder, can't I just plea the fifth to avoid saying anything that they might turn around and use against me?

Re: Subpoena to appear before a Grand Jury

If you are concerned that criminal charges may be placed against you if you testify before the Grand Jury, then you should immediately seek the advice of a criminal attorney. The attorney will not be permitted to be in the Grand Jury room with you, but you can stop the proceedings and go outside the room to seek advice. A good criminal lawyer will be able to advise you as to the possible questions you will be asked and how to respond to them. Don't take a chance by going to the Grand Jury without first talking with a criminal lawyer.
