Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Maryland

I helped a friend, her mom and brother and sister get an apartment. I put it in my name. I never thought about the fact that I wouldn't be living there, but the apartment place thought I would be and not them. If they get caught - what trouble can I get in to? They are having trouble paying rent, as of late and they JUST let me know they have court and I will be out of town. What COULD happen? I'm so scared and nervous b/c honestly, I never thought helping them would have been breaking the law. People do it all the time.

Your biggest problem right now is less "breaking the law" and more that you could be found liable for the rent that your friend and her family did not pay. If you signed the lease, you likely obligated yourself to make the rent payments. Your friend and her family could walk away and leave you holding the bag. You should try to learn more about this court date and what it is for. A lawyer can help -- feel free to email me at [email protected]; I can do a quick check for you.
