An adult child of a U.S. citizen cannot acquire automatic U.S. citizenship through the parent. The adult child would need to be petitioned (by the U.S. citizen parent) for U.S. Legal Permanent Residency first.

A grandchild cannot be petitioned by a grandparent, nor can they acquire U.S. citizenship through them.
