Legal Question in Employment Law in Massachusetts

Payroll time calculation.

I am working for a company that records your work time by 1/2 hour increments rather that rounding off to the nearest 1/4 hour. I have never seen this practice before. For example, if an employee arrives at 7:36 am they get pd from 7:30 am, If they arrive at 7:37 am, they get pd from 8 am instead of 7:45 am. Is this legal? or a new practice?

Thank you for your inquiry. As background about ourselves, Conforto Law Group is a boutique Boston law firm specializing in employment law and committed to the representation of employees.

Regarding your question, the Massachusetts Wage Act, M.G.L. c. 149, s. 148, requires employers to pay employees all earned wages. If your employer's round-up/round-down system results in unpaid time, then the policy may violate the Wage Act.
