Re: debt collections

It is likely that the hospital sold or otherwise assigned the debt to the collection agency. When that happens, you owe the collection agency and not the hospital.

Ask the collections agency for an itemized copy of their legal fees along with a copy of their contract with the hospital for the assignment of the debt. Put your request in writing and send a copy to the hospital. Also, inquire of the hospital, why you are being charged for legal fees when you paid the debt off. Put your request in writing and copy the collection agency. Once you receive the information back you will be able to make a more informative assessment. A person can be held responsible for unnecessary legal fees which you caused. Find out what damage you caused.
