Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan

My previous place of employment recently laid me off. I still have the key for the door, but left town for a week. I fully intended on turning it in. Then, I got a text message threatening I would not get paid until I returned the key. I replied that was illegal but plan on returning it when I can. Today, they threatened if I don't return it by 9pm tonight they will file a police report, but still send my check on Friday. Can thry legally threaten me like that?

Your incredibly lame excuses for not returning the key immediately (i.e. on your last day) will be included in the police report made after your arrest.
