Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Michigan

Rental Issues

I have a landlord who is fixing the boiler in my apartment complex. All of October we haven't had any heat in the bldg. I was wondering if I could withhold part of my rent to compensate for my inconvenience. Also I would like to know if there is any agencys I could talk to and where they are located.

Re: Rental Issues

Under Michigan law, a tenant has the right to withhold rent when a landlord fails to keep a rental unit in reasonable repair or otherwise maintain the unit. To support a claim, it is important to document the problem and give the landlord notice and reasonable time to repair. It sounds as if your landlord is already fixing the boiler.
