It is a pre-trial evidentiary hearing on defense motion(s) to suppress evidence that is the fruit of illegal conduct by police and other government agents.

If evidence against the accused is suppressed, it cannot be used at trial. If all evidence against the accused is suppressed, the charge(s) may be dismissed for lack of evidence.
