Legal Question in Family Law in Minnesota

Name Change

I apologize if ''Family Law'' is not the correct area...

I am female, recently married in Las Vegas, NV. The marriage certificate does not indicate that my name has changed (I have seen other marriage certificates with such indications). I live in Minnesota. Does my last name automatically and legally become my husband's by virtue of marriage, or do I need to change it by other means (and if so, how?)?

Re: Name Change

The marriage certificate is the document which legally changes a name at marriage if there is a name change. If the certificate didn't do it, you have no name change.

Your only option now is a name change proceeding in district court in the county where you reside. It is not particularly difficult. Many do it on their own without a lawyer - although I have helped many others through the process.

You have to prepare and file papers, pay a filling fee, and show up at the hearing with the required number of witnesses - three if I recall correctly. The witnesses are there primarily to identify you and make sure you are not trying to change somebody else's name.

Good luck.
