Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Minnesota

Message Boards or Chat

Can a website sue you for repeating advice found in a message board or chat area where others are freely exchanging ideas? For instance if I included a tip found on a message board in an ebook or article would that be an infringement of the web sites copyright?

Re: Message Boards or Chat

The answer to your question is based in the user's agreement you clicked through (probably without reading it) when you first signed onto the board. However, copyright in general vests in the author so it may be that the author of the tidbit you're including could sue you for infringement of copyright. That may be the website's owners.

In general, copyright infringement suits get tossed out by the courts if the copyright is not registered.
