Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Mississippi

Rental Laws/Landlord Responsability

The house I am renting has developed bad plumbing which caused a bad sewage smell/problem. I have two children one is 4 and the other is almost 2. Our main toilet does not work...overflow etc. There are also roaches everywhere in the house. They crawl in the dressers, kitchen cabinets even on my children in the night. I have purchased several roach sprays/gels. Nothing helps! My landlord expects me to hire the plumbing be fixed, with no reimbursement and to spend my money to get rid of the roaches. I need some suggestions on what to do. The house is all that we can afford and the problems are not sanitary for my young children.

Re: Rental Laws/Landlord Responsability

You need to notify the City or County Health Department in WRITING (certified MAIL) ASAP!!! Get an inspection and they will order the necessary remedial measures. IT IS URGENT THAT YOU ACT IMMEDIATELY AND DOCUMENT IN WRITING YOUR COMPLAINTS AND REQUEST FOR INSPECTION. You may be able to force repairs and they will not be able to evict you for eomplaining.
