Legal Question in Criminal Law in Missouri

1st time shoplifter

I am a 28yr old female and I was caught shoplifting at a local Wal-mart in Missouri today. The item was under $8.00. What will happen to me? What can I expect? This was a very stupid mistake and I am truly upset that I did what I did. Can someone help tell me what to expect. I want to know if this will be on my record forever also? HELP PLEASE!

Re: 1st time shoplifter

You do not tell us whether you have been charged in a Municipal court with violation of a Municipal Ordinance, or whether you have been charged in the circuit court with a violation of a state statute. This would make a drastic difference both as to the possible punishments you face and the procedures you need to go through. In any event, I can tell you that I have handled many similar cases, and it is quite likely that you will be able to negotiate a plea bargain which will avoid your taking a conviction on your record. Prior to entering into any plea bargain, however, your attorney will review all of the facts from both sides and determine whether the authorities have enough evidence to prove their case against you. If you are in the Eastern part of the state you may call me for a free telephone consultation at 314-727-2822.
