Were you named the father of the child on an Affidavit of Paternity at the time of the child's birth? Was your name put on the child's birth certificate? Did the Division of Family Services ever make an administrative determination that you were the father of this child? Has there ever been a Court Order or Judgment of Paternity? If not, then you are not the legal father of the child and currently have no rights whatsoever. It may be necessary for you to file a suit seeking a Declaration of Paternity in which a Court finds you to be the father and orders jont legal custody with shared physical custody or at least some legally enforceable rights of visitation and temporary custody. This court order will also deal with your obligation to pay child support. If you are not represented by legal counsel, and if you are in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area, I would be happy to help you. You may call me for a free telephone consultation at 314-727-2822.
